Every year, engineering teams from around the world come to compete at the World Human-Powered Speed Challenge held in Battle Mountain, Nevada. The current speed record stands at 133 Km/h (83 mph). Team AeroVelo, comprised of professionals and engineering students from the University of Toronto, brought “Eta”, their newly designed, high-speed aerodynamic bicycle or “Speed Bike” to the 2014 competition.

A major gearbox OEM needed a compact, load-sharing, releasable backstop solution for use on a new incline conveyor system at a coal mine in Pennsylvania. Unlike other backstop designs that offer limited reverse rotation after being engaged, the new solution needed to allow for a controlled release under load and be able to rotate backwards for maintenance and clearing work.

Twiflex, part of Altra Industrial Motion, has introduced a new disc brake for mining conveyor applications. The VBS modular brake features large pads and IP65 protection, making it ideal for high speed conveyor drives. The brake also benefits from Twiflex’s 'Parked Off' safety feature; the only system of its kind to allow completely safe maintenance and pad removal, the company says.
